Hello world! (It’s me, Jenn)
Welcome to Spring-a-ling Designs! Where learning is serious fun!
My name is Jennifer Springer and I am excited to start sharing my work and my passion for learning and design. I hope you find my ramblings useful.
The human mind is an amazing and agile machine and we are built for life-long learning and adaptation. It is easy to see curiosity, creativity, and commitment in a child’s approach to life. Adults tend to be creatures of habit and once we find what works for a situation, we add a checkmark next to the box marked “problem solved”. Case closed.
To stimulate learning and behavior change, we need a motivating reason to reopen the case.
- Is my motivation job security or advancement?
- Am I learning something that is interesting to me?
- Will it help me improve in an area I see as valuable?
If there is no WIIFM (What’s In It For Me), then you can bet I won’t be wasting mental energy reworking a problem that is already solved to my satisfaction.
Our opportunity as learning designers is to wake up curiosity and engage that adaptive, problem-solving part of the learner. Give them a reason to work the problem.
