Corporate Speak – Stop Using Ridiculous Phrases
Everyone uses communication shortcuts (metaphors, industry jargon) to quickly get our point across in our daily conversations. Why? It works, and we typically do what works for us.
It becomes a problem when certain phrases get used too often, or provide a vague non-answer to a real question. Are you using ridiculous phrases with your audience? Watch for eye-rolling and deep sighing.
Corporate speak refers to common phrases often used in large corporations, bureaucracies, and similar workplaces. The use of corporate jargon is criticized for its lack of clarity, making meaning and intention opaque and understanding difficult. And yes, I am totally guilty of using it occasionally. 🙂
A designer on my team shared this post, Please Stop Saying These Ridiculous Phrases at Work . We all laughed and shared our least favorite phrases.
Wouldn’t it be cool to blend these ridiculous phrases together and come up with a corporate speak elevator pitch?
Challenge Accepted:
At the end of the day, many of these phrases end up being the elephant in the room that causes disengagement and eye-rolling. It’s on my radar to eradicate these phrases from our corporate speech to promote synergy, and par for the course we will need to take this discussion offline and I should get my manager’s blessing to start working on this no brainer. I have so much on my plate and just don’t have the bandwidth to think outside the box and move the goal post on this one. Ping me later and we will circle back around and identify the low hanging fruit that will get the ball rolling and allow us to drill-down to find the biggest bang for your buck, which is a win-win. That way we can have all hands on deck and hit the ground running and hopefully won’t get thrown under the bus.
It is so much fun to say absolutely nothing with a lot of words!
