Those who can’t do, teach… say what?!
He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches.
God grant me the serenity to not yell at my friends and family when this pithy idiom comes up in conversation. Someone flippantly disparaging teachers shouldn’t get my goat and I know that.
I teach, and I can do. In fact, teaching helps me continue to improve at doing because I have to understand the subject well enough to break it down into chunks for my learner.
I am sure that there are bad teachers, just like there are bad doctors, lawyers, business execs, etc. And I am sure that there are some people who decide to go into teaching a subject because they cannot find success, or fear trying, as a practitioner.
The sweet spot is being a practitioner who is able to share knowledge with others on the journey. Empowering others to change behavior or learn a new skill motivates most people who identify as teachers.
